A near drowning of a young girl whose arm got stuck in a pool drain in a Key Biscayne apartment pool could have been prevented, an expert said. Rescue workers had to use jackhammers and respirator equipment to save the three year old child’s life.
Some states have passed laws which force certain pool owners to upgrade their pool drains with dome shaped drains or large flat drains. The purpose of the new drains is to minimize the suction effect of the older type of drains.
Drownings are one of the leading cause of death among young people. In 2005, there were a reported 3,582 fatal unintentional drownings in the United States, averaging ten deaths per day.
According to the CDC, of all deaths for children between the ages of 1 and 4, almost 30% died from drowning.
Pool safety is extremely important. If you have a child of any age, you should consider a pool safety survival course. There are instructors trained to teach infants how to float in the pool or get to the edge.
It is also important that children be supervised in the water. Homeowners who have pools need to be very careful because they can be held legally liable for medical bills, pain and suffering and even wrongful death if a child is hurt or killed in their pool.
